The Law Interpreted
The Safe Drinking Water Act is an amendment to the earlier Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act.
Under this new Act, the SDWA definition of the term lead-free has been modified to reduce the maximum lead content to ‘not more than a weighted average of 0.25 percent lead when used with respect to the wetted surfaces of pipes, pipe fittings, plumbing fittings, and fixtures’. As it pertains to valves, exempted from the provisions of the Act is any potable ‘water distribution main gate valve 2 inches in diameter or larger’.
